Also known as kamana, puteketeke and southern crested grebe, this is a lake bird of New Zealand's South Island. A part of their courtship ritual includes facing off and shaking their heads, plus raising the ruff feathers around their neck and head.

It is common for the adult birds to swim around with their young chicks sitting on their backs.
