The native grey duck (Parera) is diminishing in numbers as it loses the breeding competition against the introduced and more aggressive mallard. Cross breeding of the two species sees a significant increase in 'grallard' - a new New Zealand species - while the grey duck numbers cause concern and have it listed in the 'endangered species' category by the IUCN - The World Conservation Union.
