The Invercargill estuary is a great place for birds and bird watching. In particular, a great job was done converting the Invercargill rubbish tip into rolling dunes covered in maram grass, protecting sheltered ponds.

Late one afternoon I visited the walkway around the wetlands and found many pied stilts (poaka) checking out the mud flats.
